Abstract

Island communities face food-security constraints caused by dependence on sea transportation, limited residential land, fluctuating vegetable supply, and the need for efficient freshwater use. This community-service program is designed to empower the Fatayat NU group in Karimunjawa Village through an intelligent vertical garden integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence. The program combines organizational strengthening, cultivation and nutrition training, installation of two vertical-garden units, digital monitoring, mentoring, and evaluation. The proposed system monitors pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, and humidity and controls water and nutrient delivery to support more precise cultivation. Vertical cultivation is relevant to dense coastal settlements because production space can be expanded upward without requiring extensive flat land. It is also expected to reduce water use by approximately 30–35%, improve crop stability, and support local access to leafy vegetables during periods of disrupted sea transportation. Nutritionally, locally produced vegetables may improve access to fiber, vitamins, and minerals for households whose diets are strongly influenced by marine products. As the source document is a proposal, the satisfaction percentages presented in this manuscript are illustrative conversions rather than measured outcomes and must be replaced with actual survey data before publication. The program is expected to strengthen technological literacy, local food resilience, and community-based nutrition awareness in Karimunjawa.
