Abstract

The management of household organic and plastic waste can be transformed into a productive activity if the community gains practical knowledge, simple technology, and hands-on experience. This community service initiative was carried out under the 2026 Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) Village Empowerment Program, focusing on an integrated approach: producing solid compost from organic waste, repurposing used plastic water jugs as plant pots, and using the compost to cultivate cassava, which serves as an alternative feed for catfish. The activities employed a participatory method involving presentations, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and evaluation. Data from 21 pre-test and post-test respondents showed an increase in the average score from 72.63 to 91.33; 80.95% of respondents improved their scores, while 19.05% maintained theirs. A two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test confirmed a significant difference in scores within the paired group (p = 0.0156). The results demonstrate that integrating organic waste processing, plastic waste repurposing, and crop cultivation can serve as an effective learning package for community empowerment. Continued guidance remains necessary to assess the sustainability of these practices and their long-term environmental and economic impacts.
